Spiders
Spiders are one of those creatures that cause some people to feel uneasy. There is something unsettling about the long legs and the possibility that they would encounter a poisonous spider that can bite them and cause them harm. Some people are really afraid of spiders and take this fear to an irrational level. Either way, spiders are an essential part of the food chain and need to be treated with respect no matter how creepy looking they are.
How many times have you killed the spiders that were stuck in your home without even thinking? Well, that is the kind of thing that can affect the food chain. They are great at insect control because that is their food supply. Spiders spin their webs to contain a sticky substance that attracts flies and other bugs. Once the insect is trapped in the sticky substance, the spider then cocoons it and feeds on it. This means that if a spider has made it into your home that it will kill any fruit flies or insects that may have come in. This is also a good thing for your garden. Why spend money on poisonous substances that kill bugs when you can let any spiders that have made it into your home stay and kill the bugs themselves?
But, the common belief of spiders is that they are "icky" and must be killed. People have no problem stepping on them or using a swatter to kill them. But, spiders have as much of a right to live as anything else. Why not give them the chance? The problem with killing them off is that your actions can have a negative affect on the cycle of life as a while. This is called the butterfly affect. Even something small such as a butterfly flapping its wings in one place can have a tremendous affect on the weather somewhere else. That is because that minor disturbance caused by the butterfly wings snowballed into a bigger problem over time. The same goes for spiders. When you kill one, it snowballs. That spider is now unable to produce offspring and control the insect population. This could spell trouble.
When it comes to spiders, the best thing you can do is take care of them. Preserve their life and do your best to avoid venomous spiders. They are not to be feared, they are to be respected for the vital part of the food chain that they are.
